On March 1, 2022, a TikTok clip from Demon Slayer went around: the character Suma, sobbing, thanks Tengen Uzui โ "arigato" (Japanese for "thank you"). Through the tears it sounds exactly like "el gato" โ Spanish for "the cat." The internet decided that was funnier.
On April 4, 2022, creator @spacecadetval set the sound to a video building a papercraft cutout of a sad little munchkin kitten standing on its back legs. Grainy, teary, huge eyes. It pulled 1.4M+ likes in a week โ and that kitten became El Gato.
A tiny orange cat, standing up, big watery eyes, worried little face. Peak "sad but adorable." The whole internet started dressing him up โ knight, soldier, Batman, McDonald's employee, sombrero โ and he's since become plushies, stickers, and even a Roblox model.
No roadmap he can read, no promises he'll remember โ just a good little cat, a great sound, and a community that stands up on its hind legs for him. $ELGATO is the meme, on-chain.
